Minutes 11/3/20

Kayla is at the polls but Lorica is finished. There is a word search and other games for extra credit. Evan reached out to the LifeMoves tutoring program. Unless anyone is fluent in Spanish, they are not looking for more volunteers right now. Claire needs to make a page with instructions for the Amazon link donation. The link with volunteer opportunities is on the top of the agenda and here (https://www.lifemoves.org/holidays/). We will wait until the Amazon drive is over. We might start this for Valentine’s Day?

Magis emailed Ms. Barrada about the possibility of an in person event at school. Ms. Jordt suggested that we do a JCL among us or pictionary. Claire and Evan might be able to help out with that. Ms. Jordt will ask them tomorrow in class.

Jacob just posted the updated Lorica on the website. Annika has been working on collected photos and she will get more from Ludi. Magis has not reached out to anyone about State convention this year. She’s waiting for Ludi and Scram to be finished. Sonia will get the link for Scram.

Jaco has to send in a photo for the Photo a the Month Competition.

Minute 10/27/20

Ahna and Sonia went to Mass JCL Classics Day and it went well. One good thing they had was that colloquia was live which we should replicate at convention. The speakers were also really good. Virtual Ludi (November 14th, 2020, 9am-5pm ) will be pretty similar.

Magis went to a talk on Race and Racism in Classics. Discussing racism in the Classics is a possible, less threatening way to talk about racism today. She is going to write up a piece about the talk.

Kayla will have the draft for the Lorica done tonight. Everyone that has an article should send it to her as soon as possible.

Evan emailed the student in charge of tutoring at LifeMoves and they got back to him telling him who he should contact instead. He is going to reach out to the new person they told him to contact.

The LifeMoves Amazon wish list is finished and it just needs to be sent off. This is the link for the Amazon wish list (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/Q1H83MK9W5H6?ref_=wl_share).

Ahna, Jacob, and Magis are reaching out to the Latin 1 class on Friday.

Magis sent out the request for a movie night so far we are waiting for the Nurse to approve it.

We could do another drive like the Amazon wish list some time in January.

We need to think about a way to bring all of Menlo JCL together. We could possibly do a JCL event playing Among Us.

Minutes 10/20/20

Ahna and Sonia are going to Mass JCL Classics Day, and they will keep track of the speakers. Magis is going to a talk on Race and Racism in Classics. Ludi payment will be available on the Menlo Bookstore website tomorrow ($10). The Ludi forms are under the “Forms” tab on the Menlo JCL website.

Jacob will add a list of the current officers to the website with their photos from the Knightbook (first names only).

Magis put in a request for the Gladiator movie night on November 6, which will be the replacement of the Progressive Supper. Claire will look at the Menlo calender for a better date because people have conflicts on November 6. We are thinking about the first Friday in December (4th) at 5:30pm.

Luke has a meeting today about the E-Sports for Roma. We might be able to do an E-Sport version of a traditional Convention sport like soccer or basketball and have tournament.

Evan will reach out to the woman at LifeMoves about the tutoring program.

Kayla will be doing a fall theme for the next Lorica.

Minutes 10/13/20

Massachusetts is doing a miniature convention on Saturday, October 24th, 10am-6pm EST. Madeline Miller (author of Circe) is speaking. Sonia and Ahna will attend and Sonia will post the flyer on the instagram/email it out to everyone. She will also make a list of events and people can sign up to go watch. Anyone can attend.

Ludi is happening on November 14th, 2020 from 9am-5pm. Information to be emailed out and discussed in classes.

Jacob will post the Massachusetts flyer and the Ludi information on the website and include a link for payment on the Menlo bookstore.

We need a theme, date, and content for the new Lorica. Articles due until October 26th. Halloween theme. Magis will write up an article about race in the classical world. Kayla will write one on Halloween originating in the Ancient World.

Sonia and Evan are setting up a registry for the Redwood City Family House.

We want to do a movie on campus in place of a progressive supper. We have to get permission from the school.

Minutes 10/6/20

The Golub family offered to do a social distanced party at school with geocaching or a movie (Sparticus/Gladiator). Ms. Jordt and Magis need to get permission from the school. People like the movie idea.

Ahna, Sonia, Magis, and Ms. Jordt decided on committee heads for the Convention. We went through the different responsibilities.

We could set up an Amazon wishlist for the Redwood City Family House gifts. Evan will work on setting one up and Sonia will ask her mom.

Minutes 9/29/20

Ludi is November 14 9am-5pm. We want the maximum number of people to attend this year; people don’t need to go for the whole day. We are having the scavenger hunt tomorrow (September 30) from 12:10-12:40 for the middle schoolers. Sonia will email Ms. Nguyen from the middle school with the Zoom link and time. Evan told us a list of items that the Redwood City Family Shelter needs including baby wipes, diapers, etc. Magis asked if we should do a drive for these items or a PayPal donation. Claire suggested giving people an option between getting the items themselves (drive) and donation (Venmo). Magis and Sonia both offered to drive back and forth from our houses to the Shelter. Magis said that PayPal/Venmo is probably easier because one person can get the items and drop them off. Sonia agreed that is more convenient. We are going to decide between a drive or Venmo next week. We do not have any information on Halloween events or Lifemoves tutoring.

Sonia talked about live sports events for the State Convention to get people off their screens. Sonia will send Luke the SCL leader’s email address.

List for Redwood City Family House donations:

  • Baby wipes, soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • Shampoos, conditioners
  • Sanitizing wipes
  • Clothing
  • Blankets
  • Pillows

Minutes 9/15/20

We need someone in JCL or a Latin student to draw the cover for the state convention packet. Claire suggested asking Allie McKinny. Because Saturday is Rosh Hashanah, we decided to move the scavenger hunt to Thursday, September 24th during the tutorial (2:10-2:40). Kayla will send out an email. We voted on amendments. List of amendments.

  1. Motion passes.
  2. Motion passes.
  3. Motion passes.
  4. Motion passes.

Minutes 9/8/20

Sonia has the scavenger hunt which will last no longer than 10 minutes. We discussed the different possibilities for dates for the JCL welcome event, but we will put that decision on hold until we better understand the schedule and club timing. Kayla suggested that we open the event for all JCL families so we can hold it over the weekend. Magis suggested this Saturday, September 12th from 5-5:45pm for this “JCL Family Fun.” Sonia will welcome the new students and their families, introduce the officers, and talk to  them about the JCL program and mention the State Convention. Then we will play the slides with photos from last year as Ahna does running commentary. Kayla will then present the Lorica and the extra credit opportunities there for new kids. Sonia will run the 10 minute scavenger hunt. Then Claire will explain how new students can formally sign up and pay dues through the Menlo bookstore. We will hold off for another week on the bylaws/amendments discussion. Magis will take photos of each class and send them to Jacob. Cate and Annika will brainstorm ideas for the online scrapbook.
