JCL Minutes 4/9/19

  • Thank you notes: Francisco for driving, helping with chariot, picking up the chariot and catapult and always being ready to jump in when needed; Janelle for making it so easy to get the chariot and catapult to Miramonte; Sara for chaperoning and hanging to the very end when all the other chaperones had gone; Dr. Lyell for overseeing the MS and being always ready to help; Miramonte for hosting convention; Mr. and Mrs. Altieri for keeping everything going behind the scenes at convention; Will Buxton for writing the Open Certamen program.
  • Plans for Easter party next Thursday: What still needs to be done? Magis and Victoria need to meet
    • We need to get in contact with Popeyes and get the frosting for dessert decorating.
  • Start pushing Nationals: Natalie
    • Nationals is in North Dakota this year from July 26-31.
    • We would love more board members and JCL members in general to attend because it is great publicity for our program.
    • Victoria, Sonja, Maddie, and Ava just announced that she will be attending convention.
    • Scholarships are available, however, airfare is not included.
    • Our program is leaving on the 25th and we have free convention housing so that we are not leaving last minute.
  • Set time for Banquet
    • Magis cleared the day for Memorial Day Monday.

    • We will most likely be holding elections sometime next week.
    • However, it will be a little tough because we are hosting two parties next week.

JCL Minutes 3/12/19

  • Check on prop orders and get receipts to Magis: Jack and Sonia
    • Some of the materials have arrived for the props, and Jack needs to put together the costumes by convention.
    • Jack, please make thirty props: trash bags with the yellow tape
  • Set date for party at shelter: Victoria
    • Plans?
      • We are having an Easter party, which will take place the day before Good Friday.
  • List of who is doing what: Naomi
    • We need to get as many freshmen to attend as possible because they are the future of our program!
  • Report on trip to MS: Nat and Sophie
    • Sophie R made a clear distinction between Latin 2 and Latin 2 Accelerated, which educated the Middle School on the pace of the classes and what might be the best move for them next year.
  • Tickets for May 11: Victoria
    • These tickets are for the state board meeting, which we are very excited about!
  • Pay hotel: Morgan
    • Morgan is currently working on paying the hotel.
    • Also, he is decided that we don’t need to buy all new materials for the catapult.
    • Morgan and Henry need to start work on the catapult as soon as possible.
  • Money in account: Morgan
    • We are sending the Marriot $1900 dollars, but we still need some others to pay.
  • Another waffle sale?
    • We want to host another Waffle Sale before Spring Break.
      • We could possibly do this on Thursday, March 21st.
  • Scrapbook: Historians
    • The Historians are making great progress on the Scrapbook, but we need more photos for certain classes, so it looks more full.
  • Another meeting for cheers?
    • We will have another meeting for cheers the week before convention.

JCL Minutes 3/6/19

  • Jack needs to get props for the spirit events at convention.
    • Since the theme is “bees,” Jack was thinking of wearing yellow construction hats with antennae attached, so that way we will be like worker bees.
    • We could also get cheap yellow shirts and use black duct tape to make the stripes.
      • Since we will be wearing the shirts over our togas, we are all getting size larges.
    • Also, we could make a crown for Magis, making her the “queen bee.”
    • In addition, we can wear yellow construction gloves.
    • Lastly, we could make honey dippers to carry on with the theme.

JCL Minutes 2/26/19

  • Metamorphoses this weekend
    • Choose restaurant near Berkeley Rep, 2025 Addison St.: Natalie
    • We leave at 5 pm. From the circle. Mr. Brodie is coming with us.
    • Evan needs to fill out the Menlo permission slip
  • Carcer Report
    • Go Latin 2 and 3 teams! And everyone!
  • Show the constitution: Ethan
    • Ethan put together the entire constitution and it looks great!
  • State Convention
    • Leave at 12:15 so everyone can eat first?
      • We are planning on leaving school at 12:15 so that everyone can eat lunch and we can beat the traffic.
    • Everyone come in and sign up for what they are doing. Monday and Wed. lunch for work time.

      • Naomi and Natalie have planned out the banner, but they still need to find a time to make it.

      • Magis wants everyone, despite if you are going to convention or not, to create slogans.

    • We won for the library competition and got second place for Club of the Month!
  • Turn in State Convention Forms
    • February 11th is latest we can turn in our State Convention forms, so please get those in as soon as possible.

    • We asked Victoria to write up an article about Aequora for this Lorica issue.
    • Also, we would like to have the Valentine’s Day Lorica out before the goody bag distribution.

JCL Minutes 1/29/19

  • State dues are paid and finished!
    • We still have $1150 after state dues, according to Morgan!
  • Ludi next year: on hold til the Menlo calendar is a little further along
  • State Convention: Get those forms in!!!
    • Please get in your State Convention forms to Magis as soon as possible so that we know how many people are going.
  • Next Lorica Valentine’s Day Edition in February: Sophie S.
    • Those who are writing articles, please get it in by February 4th or 5th.
    • Sophie R, Ethan, Ahna, and Magis all need to write their articles.
  • Carcer permission slip: Magis
    • Please get in your permission slip to Carcer if you are going because Magis needs to know how many people will be present.
  • Aequora Update — Had 10 kids
  • Report on scrapbook: Historians have more pictures.
    • The Historians worked on the Scrapbook during tutorial yesterday and made a lot of progress.
      • However, two photos turned out fuzzy when printed, so Maddie is going to try to reprint them.
    • They are coordinating illustrations with Natalie, as well.
    • Also, please let Naomi know if you are willing to help her with the banner for convention.
  • Metamorphoses: We need your money and forms
    • Please get in your permission slip and money to Metamorphoses if you are going because Magis needs to know how many people will be present.
  • Prison letters are in: Should be a section in the scrapbook
    • The prisoners were extremely grateful for the books that we sent them and wrote very sweet thank you notes, which should be featured in the Scrapbook.

    • We need to make sure that those who are buying waffles know where the profits are going.

JCL Minutes 1/22/19

  • Pay state JCL Dues: Morgan
    • We need to get the JCL dues out as soon as possible because we are one of the last schools to pay.
  • Sage Hill High School is hosting scram this year.

    • We are planning on hosting Ludi next year, so it will be a really productive convention.

      • We are staying at the Marriott, and Magis is setting up the rooming options.
    • Forms: Nat and Naomi: done!
      • Natalie and Naomi have finalized the State Convention permission slips, so those will be handed out soon.

      • Mr. Morris said for Sophie S. to contact him about a Lorica article.

    • Please bring in you Metamorphoses permission slips as soon as possible so that Magis knows how many people are going.

    • In two weeks, Natalie is going to spring planning for JCL, so she will bring us back tons of new information!

JCL Minutes 1/15/19

  • Plan for JCL display at the Menlo Park Library: Sophie R.
    • Please send everything to Ahna because she puts everything on our website.
    • We have gotten to five libraries already!
  • Pay state JCL Dues: Morgan
    • We need to pay are JCL dues as soon as possible.
  • Ludi next year
    • Menlo is most likely going to host Ludi 2019!
    • Automatically, one of us gets on the board if we host.
    • If we start now, we can possibly get Mark Zuckerberg to give a talk, because he studied Latin and credits much of his success to it.
    • We could also host at Stanford, again, but it is slightly harder to be in control when we are not at our own school.

      • Once we have to prices figured out, we will hand out the forms.

    • We need a volunteer to make the banner, someone who is in ASR to make the catapult, and someone to make the chariot.

    • We have permission slips for Metamorphoses, so please try to come if you can.
    • In addition, we can invite some of the English teachers who are interested, such as Ms. Adler.

    • This is Mary Kelly’s last week of teaching Latin at the middle school, so we want to thank her for everything she has done, such as helping out at events.

    • Ideally, we would love to host another waffle sale somewhat soon because it’s always good to have money.

JCL Minutes 1/8/19

  • Congrats on Club of the Month! Again!!!
    • Although we are not sure how many clubs enter, we have been consistently winning!
  • Plan for JCL display at the Menlo Park Library: Sophie R.
    • We still need to talk to Portola Valley Library about setting up posters and handing out bookmarks.
    • However, we have put up posters and bookmarks in libraries around the Peninsula, such as Menlo Park, San Mateo, and East Palo Alto.
  • State Convention — need to get on this
    • Convention is MANDATORY, so please tell your parents to leave for vacation on Sunday morning after convention.

      • Natalie, Naomi, and Magis need to have a meeting soon about the convention forms.

    • Morgan needs to sort through the checks and expenses.

    • Really only high schoolers can go to this because there is a lot of nudity.
    • Tickets may be on sale, so we need to get them as soon as possible.
  • Ethan will be printing the Constitution by January 31st.
  • We need to plan a meeting for potential state board candidates.
    • Naomi can send out a reminder email, as well.
